Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Kansas City based alto saxophonist, composer and educator Christopher Burnett. This is our second interview during the COVID-19 pandemic and it took place on December 17, 2020. We covered a lot of good jazz ground .. Primarily, we discussed his fourth album as a leader titled,The Standards, Vol. 1 on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label. The album of mostly post-bop compositions will be released in January 2021. He recorded the album under the brilliance of producer Bill Crain at BRC Audio Productions in Kansas City with a collection of stellar KC musicians. He was born in Olathe and raised in Paola, Kansas and his latest album was 2014’s Firebird – one in a lineup of memorable albums from this cat that started his professional career with military jazz bands “going pro” directly upon graduating high school at 18 years old – he would go on to complete a a full 22-year career performing and touring with notable military bands – Over the course his 40-plus year career, he has been around the world, recorded albums as a leader, taught at the college-level and co-founded the Artists Recording Collective.
