Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Kansas City based alto saxophonist, composer and educator Christopher Burnett. This is our second interview during the COVID-19 pandemic and it took place on December 17, 2020. We covered a lot of good jazz ground .. Primarily, we discussed his fourth album as a leader titled, The Standards, Vol. 1 on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label. The album of mostly post-bop compositions will be released in January 2021. He recorded the album under the brilliance of producer Bill Crain at BRC Audio Productions in Kansas City with a collection of stellar KC musicians. He was born in Olathe and raised in Paola, Kansas and his latest album was 2014’s Firebird – one in a lineup of memorable albums from this cat that started his professional career with military jazz bands “going pro” directly upon graduating high school at 18 years old – he would go on to complete a a full 22-year career performing and touring with notable military bands – Over the course his 40-plus year career, he has been around the world, recorded albums as a leader, taught at the college-level and co-founded the Artists Recording Collective. He’s a strong pillar in the KC jazz community and has so much to offer, many skills and equally as many stories. Neon Jazz is a radio program airing since 2011. Mr. Burnett returned home to the Kansas City area in 2001 after serving 22 years with military jazz bands. He worked with Leon A. Brady’s famous jazz education program for five years (until Mr. Brady retired) and then with other jazz education programs. As the leader of this new premier student jazz artist opportunity Youth Jazz, he is training the next generation of Jazz Musicians ..
